Who is Mr. Dawes?
Edmund S. "Ned" Dawes, Jr., P.E. - Biography
This is my ninth year as a teacher. In 2007, after working for 25 years with two different consulting engineering firms, I decided to become a middle school teacher. Since making the change to pursue a teaching career, I earned a Master of Education degree at Salem State University and obtained my teaching license. I have an Associates degree in Civil Engineering from Vermont Technical College and a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Vermont. I am a registered professional civil engineer in Massachusetts.
While working for the consulting engineering firms, my specialty was performing overall project management, preparing detailed construction plans/specifications/construction cost estimates, and overseeing major transportation infrastructure construction projects at airports across the country. For the last 14 years of my career, my focus was managing airport improvement projects at Logan International Airport.
The following experiences have drawn me to teaching:
• Past member of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Civil Engineering Advisory Board Member
• Guest lecturer at Northeastern University and Merrimack College
• Adult member of Cub/Boy Scouting in Marblehead
• Volunteer through the Boston Society of Civil Engineer for MVMS’s Future City Program
After completing my Master's degree, I have participated in the following summer programs to further my knowledge in STEM education:

After completing my Master's degree, I have participated in the following summer programs to further my knowledge in STEM education:
- Summer 2010 - Salem CyberSpace - STEM teacher for a MIT/NASA-funded space robotics program
- Summer 2011 - Boston University's Photonics Center - Research Experience for Teachers (RET) - working in Dr. Reinhard's lab designing sensor chips to detect trace amounts of explosive vapors and a robot to bring the chips to the site of the potential danger. - Summer 2012 - Northeastern University Capsule Program - A National Science Foundation program for STEM middle and high school teachers to learn how to implement capstone projects in their curriculum.
- Summer 2013, 2014, and 2015 - Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc. - Worked as a Senior Project Engineer within Jacobs' Boston Aviation Department. Worked on design and construction projects at Logan International Airport as well as other aviation projects for Massachusetts and Connecticut municipal airports.
- Summer 2016 - Museum of Science - I was one of eight educators selected to participate in the museum's Teacher-in-Residence Program. I was teamed with another teacher to develop educational materials associated with the new Yawkey Gallery on the Charles River exhibit. This exhibit highlights the Charles River and how the natural and engineered worlds are interconnected.
